Buying advice
Value sorters by the material they recover
A sorting robot or optical sorter pays back through the value of the cleaner material it produces and the labour it replaces, so model both before you compare prices. Ask each maker for measured purity and recovery rates on a material stream like yours, and for references from facilities handling similar loads. The Waste Framework Directive, Directive 2008/98/EC, underpins EU recycling targets, and Regulation (EU) 2025/40 on packaging adds recycled-content requirements for plastic packaging, which can shape demand for well-sorted bales. By October 2026, listed prices here spanned roughly $200 (Nordsense Sensor) to $5 million (Ocean Cleanup System 002), and a single listing needed a quote.
Count the retrofit around the robot
Fitting a picking robot into an existing plant usually means more than bolting it to a conveyor. Budget for platforms, conveyor changes, guarding, electrical work, compressed air and the downtime needed to install them. Analytics units such as the Greyparrot Analyzer may be listed in more than one configuration, so check exactly what each listing covers before comparing. Get each maker to quote installation on your own layout drawing, since the cheapest robot can sit inside the most expensive retrofit. Ask, too, who maintains the conveyors and guarding once the installers leave.
Field robots need crews and transport too
Sewer, pipe and water-cleanup systems such as the RedZone Solo, Envirosight ROVVER X or BeBot are tools for a crew rather than stand-alone machines. Their prices leave out the van or vessel that carries them, the operators who run them, cleaning and decontamination after each job, and the software that turns footage into reports. Ask the maker which of these items are included, what a typical crew looks like and what training costs. For councils and utilities, compare owning a system against buying inspection or cleanup as a contracted service.
What to look for
- Hardware price against software, data and support subscriptions
- Throughput and uptime needed to justify a sorting line
- Pipe diameter, depth or water conditions for field robots
Common questions
Are recycling robots priced per unit?
Some list a unit price, but sorting systems are usually configured to a facility. Request a quote with your material streams and throughput.
Can councils buy smart bins and sensors here?
Yes. Fill-level sensors and smart bins are listed alongside the robots, and multi-unit quotes are available on The Humanoid Group.
