Buying advice

Count the devices each robot needs

Many classroom robots are programmed from a tablet, laptop or phone, so the real price per pupil includes the screens and the time spent installing apps on them. Ask each maker which devices and operating systems its coding tools support and whether they run in a web browser. IEEE Spectrum described a student-built platform in Mexico that delivers robotics and AI lessons through web browsers, so schools need neither a dedicated computer lab nor preinstalled software, which shows how much the surrounding kit can matter. As of October 2026, you could see listed prices as low as about $20 for the Micro:bit and as high as about $29,000 for the Sawyer, and each one carried a price.

Discontinued research robots trade price for support

Older research platforms such as Rethink Robotics' Baxter Research Robot and Sawyer are listed as discontinued. A discontinued robot can look like good value, but spare parts, software updates and community help thin out over time, and replacing a failed joint may cost more than you saved. Ask the seller what is included, whether the unit has been refurbished and which software versions it runs. For a lab that needs years of dependable use, a platform that is still in production may prove cheaper overall, even at a higher price.

Plan for breakage, charging and repairs

A class set takes far more knocks than a single robot at home. Ask what the warranty says about classroom use, whether the maker runs a repair or swap scheme for schools, and whether a charging station for the whole set is included or sold separately. Kits sold as toys in the United States must comply with ASTM F963-23 under 16 CFR Part 1250, so a cheaper import without test evidence can become a false saving if your purchasing rules ask for it. Check repair turnaround times too, since a kit sent away for weeks leaves a group without a robot.

What to look for

  • Price per student once you count shared kits and spares
  • Software and curriculum licences, and whether they renew yearly
  • Add-on sensors, motors and expansion packs you'll need later

Common questions

Is there pricing for class sets?

Choose a quantity at checkout, or request a quote with your class size and kit list for larger school orders.

Which robots suit a university lab?

Look at the research robots, such as TurtleBot 4, Kinova Gen3 and Sawyer, which are built for open software and advanced coursework.
